
A well-installed hardwood floor disappears into the room. It feels right underfoot, the planks meet flush at the joints, the colour stays consistent through changing light, and the whole surface ages into something that looks better at year ten than it did at year one. A badly installed floor, on the other hand, starts telling on itself within months. A creak here, a gap there, a slight dent when you walk across it in bare feet.
The frustrating thing is that most installation problems are not catastrophic on day one. They surface over weeks and months, often after the warranty conversation has gone cold and the contractor has moved on to the next job. By the time the homeowner notices, the question is no longer whether the floor was put down properly. It is what to do about it now.
Knowing what a bad install actually looks like, and what causes it, is the difference between catching a fixable problem early and replacing the entire floor in five years. So what should you actually be looking for?
Most installation issues trace back to a handful of root causes. Skipped acclimation. Subfloor problems that were painted over instead of being addressed. Wrong fasteners or wrong spacing. A finish rushed through its cure time.
Here are twelve of the most telling signs, what causes each one, and what they mean for the long-term health of your floor.
If you walk across your hardwood and feel ridges, dips, or a sense that one part of the room sits higher than another, the issue is almost always under the floor rather than in it. An uneven subfloor is the most common cause. When the substrate beneath your timber is not properly levelled before installation, every imperfection shows upward into the planks. The result is a floor that rolls visibly along the grain or shifts underfoot in patches.
The fix is rarely simple. Cosmetic issues might be addressed by lifting and re-laying affected sections over a levelled substrate, but a widespread problem usually means pulling up the floor and starting again with proper subfloor preparation. This is why a competent installer will spend serious time on the subfloor before a single plank goes down.
Cupping is when the edges of each plank rise slightly above the centre, giving the floor a faint washboard texture you can sometimes feel through socks. Buckling is more severe: planks lifting away from the subfloor entirely, sometimes producing visible peaks where the wood has separated from the substrate. Both are moisture problems, and both point to either subfloor moisture issues, missed acclimation, or insufficient expansion gaps.
Wood absorbs and releases moisture from the air around it. If planks were installed without time to adjust to the humidity of the room they would live in, or if the subfloor was holding more moisture than it should have been, the timber warps as it tries to find equilibrium. In tropical and humid climates, this is one of the most common installation failures, which is why proper moisture testing is non-negotiable.
The opposite problem from cupping, crowning, is when the centre of each plank sits higher than the edges, producing a faint ridge along the middle of every board. Excessive gaps are wider-than-normal spaces between planks, often visible enough to catch dust and crumbs.
Both usually mean the timber dried out after installation, either because the room’s humidity dropped sharply or because the wood went in with too much moisture content and shrank as it normalised. A small amount of seasonal variation is expected and is even healthy. Hardwood breathes. But gaps you could fit a coin into, or crowning you can feel through socks, are signs the install did not account for how the wood would behave once it’s in a room.
Wood expands and contracts with humidity. This is not a flaw; it is physics. A properly installed hardwood floor has a small expansion gap around the perimeter of every room, typically around 10 to 15 millimetres, hidden under the skirting board. This gap gives the floor room to grow when humidity rises without pushing against the walls.
Skip the gap, and the floor has nowhere to go when it expands. The result is buckling, lifting at the centre of the room, or visible distortion along walls. You can sometimes spot the problem by looking at where the floor meets the skirting. If the planks are pushed flush against the wall with no breathing room, the installer either rushed or did not understand how wood behaves in a humid environment.
A new floor that creaks every time you walk across it is not “settling in.” It is telling you something. Squeaks usually come from one of three sources: insufficient fasteners (planks moving against each other), an uneven subfloor (planks flexing as you step on them), or improper nailing technique that left the boards loose against the substrate.
Some minor noise in the first few weeks after installation can be normal as the wood acclimatises fully. But persistent, location-specific squeaks that worsen over time are an installation issue. The longer they go untreated, the more likely they are to develop into wider stability problems, since the underlying movement that causes the noise also wears down the joints between planks.
Quality wood flooring, properly installed and sealed, should look essentially new for the first five years and excellent for the first decade. If your floor is showing scratches, dullness, dents, or visible wear paths within the first year or two, the installation is the most likely suspect.
Premature wear usually traces back to one of two causes: a finish that was applied too thinly, applied incorrectly, or rushed through its cure time, or the wrong species and grade of timber for the room’s traffic. A high-traffic hallway needs harder, denser wood than a guest bedroom. If your installer did not have a conversation with you about the species best suited to your home’s traffic patterns, you may be living with the consequences.
The subfloor is the foundation everything else rests on, and it is the single most common place where installations go wrong. A correctly prepared subfloor should be clean (no dust, no debris, no residue from a previous floor), dry (within the moisture tolerance specified by your hardwood’s manufacturer), level (no dips or high spots beyond a couple of millimetres over a metre), and structurally sound.
When subfloors are not prepared properly, every problem above gets worse. Levelling issues cause uneven floors and squeaks. Moisture issues cause cupping and buckling. Debris trapped between the substrate and the planks causes voids that show up as soft spots underfoot. The visible signs of a bad subfloor prep show up in the floor above, but the cause is in the layer you cannot see.
Hardwood is fastened to the subfloor through one of three methods: nailing, stapling, or glueing, depending on the type of floor and the substrate. Each has a correct application rate. Too few fasteners, and planks shift, leading to squeaks and gaps. Too many, and you risk splitting the wood or creating stress points that show up as crowning or surface distortion.
Glue squeezing out between planks during installation is another red flag. A small amount is normal and gets cleaned off as work progresses, but visible glue residue along seams or thick beads pushed up between boards suggests an installer either used the wrong adhesive or applied it carelessly. Excess glue can also affect how the finish bonds to the wood, leading to a patchy appearance later on.
There are reasons hardwood is laid in particular directions. Structurally, planks should generally run perpendicular to the floor joists below, since this maximises stability and minimises flex. Visually, the direction of the planks affects how the room reads: lengthwise to elongate, across the room to widen, or in a pattern (herringbone, chevron, parquet) to create a focal point.
A bad install often gets this wrong. Planks laid parallel to the joists rather than across them are more likely to develop bounce, sag, and squeaks over time. Random or inconsistent staggering of plank ends, where seams line up too closely or repeat in an obvious pattern, weakens the floor structurally and looks amateurish. Look across your floor from a low angle. If the joints form visible lines or H-shaped patterns rather than a random staggered look, the layout was not planned properly.
A well-finished hardwood floor has a uniform sheen, consistent colour, and a smooth, even surface that catches the light the same way across the entire room. If you can see brush marks, lap lines (where one application met another), patches of different gloss levels, or visible drag marks from the applicator, the finish was applied poorly.
This is more common with site-finished floors, where the sanding, staining, and sealing all happen in your home, and quality depends entirely on the installer’s skill. Prefinished floors come from the factory with a more consistent finish, but they can still show inconsistencies if planks from different batches were mixed without careful sequencing. An inconsistent finish is not just a cosmetic problem. Patches of thinner finish wear through faster, leading to bare spots that need to be addressed long before the rest of the floor.
This one happens before installation, but its effects show up afterwards. Every hardwood install should begin with moisture testing of both the subfloor and the timber itself. The two readings need to be close, and both should fall within the manufacturer’s specified range.
Installers who skip this step are gambling with your floor. If the timber goes down significantly drier than the subfloor, it will absorb moisture from below and cup. If it goes down wetter than the room, it will dry out and gap. To avoid this, ask any installer you are considering whether they moisture-test before laying. If the answer is anything less than a confident yes, keep looking.
A confident installer stands behind their work. Reputable hardwood specialists offer a workmanship warranty separate from the product warranty that comes with the timber itself, and that warranty should cover installation-related defects (cupping from poor moisture management, squeaks from inadequate fastening, finish issues that are not the result of normal wear) for a reasonable period of time.
If a contractor is reluctant to put their work in writing, or if the warranty they offer is suspiciously short or full of exclusions, take it as a signal. The installers who do this work properly know their floors will hold up. The ones who cut corners want to be out the door before problems surface.
Some installation issues can be addressed without a full redo. A handful of squeaky boards can be re-fastened. Localised cupping from a fixed leak can be replaced plank by plank. A patchy finish can sometimes be sanded back and re-coated. But widespread problems, especially anything involving moisture or subfloor preparation, almost always require pulling sections of the floor up and starting over with the underlying issue addressed.
The honest truth about hardwood is that the install matters as much as the wood itself. A premium species laid badly will fail. An average species laid well will last decades.
