
Stand a quality engineered board next to a solid plank, same oak, same finish, and once they are fitted, you would struggle to tell them apart by eye. Both are real wooden flooring, finished in the same hardwood and sanded the same way. The difference is in how each board is constructed below the surface.
A solid plank is one piece of timber top to bottom, so it swells and shrinks every time the humidity around it changes. An engineered wood flooring board keeps a thin hardwood top and sets it over a core that resists that movement. That one structural difference is behind almost everything that separates the two.
Solid wood flooring is exactly what the name suggests. Each plank is milled from a single, continuous piece of hardwood, typically somewhere between 14mm and 21mm thick. There is no core, no backing, no layers. What you see on the surface runs all the way through the board. That homogenous depth is what you are paying for, and it is also why the natural material swells and shrinks so much as the humidity changes, because every millimetre of it absorbs and releases moisture from the air.

Engineered wood flooring is often misunderstood as a “fake” wood floor. It is not.
Engineered wood is a layered board: a real hardwood wear layer, 2mm to 6mm thick, bonded over a core of plywood or high-density fibreboard (HDF).
The core is what changes everything.
Each plywood layer is laid with its grain crossing the layer above, so when one layer tries to expand, the adjacent layers resist it. This cross-layered construction is the whole point, and it is what gives engineered wood its main advantage.
Engineered wood justifies its price through what that stable core makes possible.
The catch with engineered wood is the very thing that makes it affordable: the hardwood is only a thin layer on top, which limits how many times the floor can be refreshed.
The honest answer is that it depends on two physical facts about your home: what lies beneath your floor, and how you run your aircon.
Solid wood needs a timber subfloor and a stable humidity, and in return gives you a floor you can refinish for decades. Engineered wood lies over concrete and won’t gap or cup through the daily change from a cold, dry room to a warm, humid one.
Neither is the better floor in the abstract, they simply suit different homes and needs.

Three factors settle the choice for most buyers, and they matter more than any single line in the spec sheet: how heavily you run your aircon, your budget over time, and the look you are after.
Air-conditioning is the factor that tips the decision in most homes. An aircon unit does not just cool a room, it dries it, drawing moisture from the air as it runs, then letting it flood back once it is off. Solid timber responds to that daily change by swelling and shrinking, which is what opens gaps and cups the boards in a home kept cold and dry all day. An engineered board does not react the same way: the cross-grain core means the boards neither gap nor cup when the air dries out.
Solid wood flooring costs more to buy and more to fit, and the return on that is lifespan: refinish it every few years and the floor can last for decades without needing to be replaced.
Engineered wood costs less to buy, to fit and to maintain.
Given this, for a homeowner who plans to stay in the same house for several years, solid wood’s longevity makes financial sense. For anyone likely to renovate again in ten to fifteen years, the lower cost of engineered wood is the more practical choice.
For a lot of buyers, the look they have their heart set on decides the material before anything else does. Narrow boards and parquet patterns belong to classic, heritage interiors, and that is solid timber’s home ground, partly because solid planks have to be cut narrow to begin with.
The broad, long planks behind most modern interiors would warp at that width in solid timber, so a wide-plank floor is almost always an engineered floor. The width itself rules out the alternative.
Both are real wood once they are down, so the style you want does not cost you anything in material quality. It only commits you to a particular board format.
So, is engineered wood better than solid wood? Not universally.
By now, the dividing line between the two main types of wooden flooring should be clear: solid wood for a stable, naturally ventilated home where you want a floor to keep for decades, engineered wood for an air-conditioned home or a concrete subfloor where stability matters most.
